It WAS NOT A CHANCE MEETING
We first met in passing 5 years ago in Melbourne.
K: I grew up in Queensland but had moved to Melbourne with my partner Joel in 2010. Melbourne is a city that welcomes creatives. We chose to move there to expand our careers, travel more and see where the world would take us. I met some incredible people there and began to build many strong working relationships which still exist today. I was lucky enough to gain representation by boutique talent agency Coco Productions. From then on I was shooting editorials constantly, driving all over the countryside working with some of the best talent around. I was also head trainer at a prestigious makeup academy, working with MAC Pro cosmetics and doing huge weddings every other weekend. I was pretty much attached to my makeup kit.
I worked, I travelled, I got married. It was a special time in our lives but I was pretty much constantly freezing. The crappy Melbourne weather really started to take its toll. I needed the sun and the blue sky. A trip to Hawaii in 2015 changed something in me. The warm air and the relaxed beach lifestyle was something I wanted to reconnect with after many years shooting in sub-artic temperatures and cold studios I knew it was time to head back to the tropics. I then fell pregnant and at 36 weeks we moved back to Brisbane! (that is a story for another time). In March 2016 I had my baby girl Zuzu Rosie Pearl. And life officially changed forever.
M: I left Geelong in 2011 and moved to NYC to take a chance and pursue my dream of working as a fashion/editorial makeup artist. It was extremely hard work and it took a lot of motivation and determination- but I did it. My very first job in NYC was making up all the NEXT models for V magazine and it just snowballed from there. Before I knew it I had done a Jennifer Hudson music video, shoots for every magazine you could possibly think of and travelled to London, Milan and Paris for Fashion Week. I was 1 of 28 makeup artists from around the world to be chosen to work on the Chanel shows and it was a dream come true. I remember actually pinching myself when I was standing in the Grand Palais next to Karl Lagerfeld.
I lived abroad for 3 years and it was the most amazing experience of my life. I worked with some of the most talented creative’s in the world, travelled to the most exotic locations and met so many inspiring people. Once my visa had expired, I moved back to Sydney and continued working in fashion and also became a trainer for the L’Oreal luxury brand, Lancome. I made amazing friends, enjoyed many Bondi beach days and met my partner. After only a few months of being together, Bruno received a promotion with his work and was asked to relocate to Brisbane. When he asked me to move, I was nervously excited. Brisbane was not a place I thought I would ever move, but I was head over heels in love and the relaxed vibe and holiday lifestyle was very appealing. And so I took a chance and moved. And it has been the best decision I have made!
K: Michelle & I had met in Melbourne many years ago. She had been invited as a guest speaker at my college to talk about her vibrant career and I remember being fascinated by her backstage stories in Paris (and all the free Chanel products). Michelle had recently moved to Brisbane and we reconnected at a makeup college we both started teaching at. We had a lot in common both professionally and personally and always had something to talk about.
M: In 2012, I came back to Australia for my best friends wedding and I was asked to present at the makeup school I had studied at. Karissa was the Head Makeup trainer at the time and this is where we first met. And I remember thinking… She seems pretty cool.
FEEL THE HEART BEATING
M: Within a couple of weeks knowing each other, we quickly discovered we viewed the world in the same way, we had a similar idea of beauty, same aesthetic, energy and goals as artists. We both have been individually planning our whole careers for what was about to be born.
K: For me it was all pretty serendipitous. I still remember the exact moment I sent the message, “let’s open up a studio” It evolved quickly from there. We are both Gemini’s so we are fast paced, productive and just like to get things done.
We started talking about our views and vision and realized it was very similar. We were able to tap into each others insights and things started to really come to light. We were very open about our personal strengths and weaknesses, which I think allowed us to avoid as many blind spots as we could, and helped us be clear about how we could complement each other.
M: The great thing about being in business with another Gemini is that you always feel like your twin has your back. We view our business like a marriage. We are exposed, raw and real. And we are very respectful and considerate towards each other. We spent many late nights working on the business plan and many days learning about flooring, wallpaper and lighting for the studio! It was quite the ride getting it all off the ground.
AUTHENTICITY IS WHAT MATTERS
K: Our extensive experience working across many parts of the industry allows us to offer confidence and a clear vision to all types of styles, requests, skin types and cultures.
We developed KM to embrace beauty and each individual’s radiance. We don’t believe in the cookie cutter style of makeup that is all about covering up. The products we use are tried and tested. We listen to and work with our clients to achieve the style they are after.
M: We are both well travelled and have lived and worked in different parts of the world. We are both adaptable, calm and open by nature. At KM we are not trying to do anything other than what we love. The makeup and hair we do is designed from a combination of experience and the many years listening to our clients. We are not interested in doing anything that doesn’t inspire joy, authenticity and creativity.
ALWAYS ON VACATION
K+M: Brisbane has a great energy and there is always some sense that you’re on vacation. The weather and the relaxed vibe mean the people we surround ourselves with are full of life. Brisbane is also connected to some of the most beautiful parts of the world such as Byron Bay, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Island and Moreton Island. Many creatives left Brisbane years ago only to returndue to the quality of life- it becomes so important. You can be busy but it shouldn’t rule your life. We created KM Studios based around the holiday vibe we all love and dream about. The studio is a little Moroccan inspired haven to escape to, and have your hair & makeup done or get a gorgeous spray tan.
TOWARDS THE LIGHT
K+M: Presently we are embracing this moment of creation – the recent birth of KM MAKEUP STUDIOS. The Studio, our partnership, our clients and our vision is creating lots of energy right now. We have lots of exciting things happening in the pipeline.
We embrace this and look to the future with genuine passion and excitement.
